The Power of Community in Purpose Work

I was twelve years old when my mentor Walter first showed me what community really meant. At that age, I couldn’t fully understand the depth of his lessons, but I knew enough to pay attention. He taught me how important it was to not only belong to a community, but to build it, nurture it, and pour into it. That understanding became a foundation for everything I do today.

Community has always been at the center of my work. Every business I’ve started has been about building spaces for people to connect, create, and grow. FE Conservatory gives young dancers and artists a place to train and find their voice. Parc Village is a hub for local artists and culture, a space where creativity can be shared. Heritage Parc focuses on preserving culture and history through nonprofit programs that strengthen identity. And The Creole Nutcracker gives families a chance to experience the arts while celebrating Louisiana Creole culture. Each of these businesses serves a different need, but together they form a bigger picture of access and community building.

I know I wouldn’t be able to do this without the mentors and leaders who poured into me along the way. Walter was the first, but he was not the only one. Over the years I’ve been blessed to meet many people whose wisdom and encouragement prepared me for the work I do now. I still draw on their examples and lessons every day.

The truth is, this work is not easy. It takes commitment and resilience. But I feel grateful and honored to be called to do it. And I also know this is just the beginning. I’ve always been a dreamer and a believer. My mind is constantly turning with new ideas, new programs, and new ways to serve. Community work isn’t something I do on the side, it is who I am. And because of that, I know the best is still ahead.
